Not much is known or verified about the Charles Levit Peterson and Mary Bertha Colthar Peterson family. Picture above is Fontain Peterson in a 1917 photo of his "racer" in Virginia. There are good stories however, so read on to learn more
It is possible, but not verified, that the Peterson of New Jersey ancestral history started in Bollebygd, Sweden. Charles Levit Peterson claimed the family hailed originally from Sweden. Research is now underway to verify Olaf Peterson, from family records of Charles Levit Peterson of Clermont County, Ohio.

According to the family, Fontain Peterson was the first professional photographer in Colorado, before it was a state. He, his wife Caroline, and his brother Clay drove a horse drawn covered wagon from Clermont County, Ohio to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1865. In Illinois, they picked up passengers Mrs. Keyes and her nine-year-old son Wil who were going to Fort Collins. There is no mention of what happened to Wil's father, but the civil war had just ended. Perhaps someone in the Keyes family might shed some light on this someday. Copy of the Keyes trip is included in this site.
